Annual Grief-in-Public Day
Calling all death workers
to join
April 28, 2024
this grassroots movement
Dear Death Workers,
As you know, we are in a global grief crisis, amplified by genocide, climate collapse, and navigating the fall of colonialism, imperialism and capitalism as we know it — among many other collective and personal losses.
Yet we live under an overarching denial of this grief. Let's show our communities a different way.
We, as a collective of death workers, create symbiotic movements that upend this denial.
We give our communities safe places of welcome and affirmation to express collective grief.
If we combine our efforts in doing so, we may spark a new and significant wave of grief awareness.
Let's amplify our energies on April 28, 2024, for the 3rd Annual
Grief-in-Public Day.
*Keep reading to find out what this important day is, how to participate and how to help make it happen.
What is Annual Grief-in-Public Day?
Annual Grief-in-Public Day
is ultimately a day for awareness
to be raised about our global grief crisis.
By creating grief-accepting spaces
in public we begin to change the cultural narrative about where grief expression
is acceptable.
What happens on Annual Grief-in-Public Day?
On Annual Grief-in-Public Day death workers, grief workers and anyone else who'd like to join them, create a public display that raises awareness about the Grief Crisis.
This is where your creativity comes in!
What sorts of things can you do for
Annual Grief-in-Public Day?
This is YOUR space you are creating.
You can do this as a group effort with other death workers in your area or ask friends to help you create this public grief awareness space. Individual acts that publicly presence grief are welcome, too.
Need ideas? See below.
Ideas for Annual Grief-in-Public Day activities:
get creative
*Have a space for people to write something about their grief and tie the notes to a tree to blow in the wind
*Have a table with tea light candles for them to light a candle for their grief
*Have a bell sitting on a table with a sign that says, "If you see our collective grief, ring the bell."
*If you can't be outside on this day, hold a virtual "Grief-in-Public Day" event, inviting your community to an online space!
Where does Annual Grief-in-Public Day happen?
It happens from Italy to Anchorage, from San Diego to Ontario.
It happens in town centers, public parks and school parking lots.
It happens where it can!
It happens on Sunday, April 28, 2024 !

Some last notes
You do not have to post on social media the address of your location. Safety first always.
This is not only a social media outreach, but a Collective (capital C) outreach.
We are out in the public doing this amazing work together, all on the same day.
Do take pictures - day of - and use hashtag
#annualgriefinpublicday
Some last notes continued:
This is not an event led by one single person.
This is a collective call.
You do not have to be a death worker to participate. Artists, teachers, nurses, etc. ...all called
It is important that this collective call be announced on social media on THE SAME DAYS, APRIL 1st and April 8th, as it will get more attention and traction this way.
In your post please call other Death Workers (and others) to join in.
Send them the link you used to access this page.
Steps to making this a success:
“Imagine the feeling of relief that would flood our whole being if we knew that when we were in the grip of sorrow or illness, our village would respond to our need. This would not be out of pity, but out of a realization that every one of us will take our turn at being ill, and we will need one another. The indigenous thought is when one of us is ill, all of us are ill. Taking this thought a little further, we see that healing is a matter, in great part, of having our, connections to the community and the cosmos restored. This truth has been acknowledged in many studies. Our immune response is strengthened when we feel our connection with community. By regularly renewing the bonds of belonging, we support our ability to remain healthy and whole.”
― Francis Weller, The Wild Edge of Sorrow
The collective that birthed this idea would like to remain anonymous and would like to see this become a self-sufficient event.
